Most likely, that statement was made in regards to level 60 (now 70) characters.
At level 33, your gear is probably 80 or more greens. You're also at the low end of the level (x0-x5 being low, x6-x9 being high, if you know what I mean). This makes it easier for
your pet to hold aggro as his growl is relatively more powerful. When you get closer to the end of a level set (for you, 38, 39) you'll notice you pull aggro more often, aimed shot or not. This changes and resets when you hit 40 because you learn a new growl again.
As
long as you are not currently pulling aggro, there is no reason not to open with an aimed shot.
Hell, even at 60 I would solo really hard mobs using the tactic to open with Aimed, cuncussive, multi, arcane, and then feign death right away when my
pet was on it, just to open with a huge burst of damage.
That technique is made even more viable with the addition of Misdirection at 70, and you don't even need to feign death!
In the long run, the advice given in forum posts is usually just that: advice. Not set in stone rules. If it works for you, stick to it. But generally, the advice is given based on factual experience.

Back into FFXI while waiting for FFXIVI think opening with aim shot is fine. I do it all the time. If your not gettin ne agro then theres no reason why not to.I was reading some random posts and some said I shouldn`t open with aimed shot. Why? i`m lev 33 and I normaly: aspect of hawk, hunter mark, start aimed shot, send pet, pet charges (yes I have a boar XD), pet growls, Aimed hits. And no matter what I do I can`t pull aggro of my pet (not like I`m trying to though). So what`s the problem with opening with aimed. And suppose aimed IS bad for opening, what other uses does it have (because no-noob will let you cast aimed and if there frozen I prefer increasing distance by 40 yards instead of just 20, turn and aimed.
